Window on Work Values (WoWV) Profile

Bridging the Values Divide 2 of 2

In our previous blog, we explored how understanding the Window on Work Values (WoWV) model can help bridge value gaps in the workplace. While recognizing different values is essential, real transformation happens when we apply this knowledge in practical ways. The great news is, we’ve prepared five effective strategies to help you build connection and collaboration across diverse value sets in the workplace.

  1. Focus on Shared Goals
When we’re aware of others' values, we can frame discussions around shared objectives. Even if we differ in our values, there’s often common ground in our desired outcomes. For example, someone who values Authority (structured control) and someone who values Empowerment (autonomy) may both want project success. Emphasize how each approach can uniquely contribute to that goal.

  2. Engage in Open, Values-Based Dialogue
Create an environment where people can express their values without judgment. When discussing new policies or changes, acknowledge the value perspectives at play. If implementing a new policy, for instance, explain how it respects both Compliance (rule-based) and Independence (self-direction) values by setting clear guidelines but allowing flexibility in implementation.

  3. Adapt Communication Styles
Tailor your communication to meet others where they are. If you’re engaging with someone who values Conformity (adherence to norms), use structured language and outline the benefits for the team. For those who value Equality, frame initiatives as collaborative efforts that respect all voices.

  4. Leverage Strengths Across Value Sets
Each value cluster brings strengths that can complement others. By strategically assigning roles that match individual values, we can maximize team effectiveness and respect everyone’s unique contributions. For example, someone who values Individualism might excel in independent, high-responsibility roles, while a Collectivist may thrive in team-centric projects.

  5. Develop Conflict Resolution Skills
Conflict often arises from value clashes, but understanding these values allows us to reframe the narrative. Establish team norms for resolving differences, such as listening sessions or values-clarification exercises, which can help people feel heard and respected, even if they disagree.

Finding Unity in Diversity

At the heart of bridging divides—whether in politics, society, or the workplace—is a willingness to see people as complex individuals with unique perspectives shaped by their core values. By using models like the Window on Work Values, we gain a practical yet respectful framework to understand these values, pace each other thoughtfully, and ultimately build a more inclusive and harmonious environment at work.

In the end, it’s not about changing others to match our views. It’s about building bridges of understanding, one value at a time. Through empathy, respect, and shared goals, we can create spaces where differences become strengths and diversity in values becomes the foundation for a richer, more productive world.
